Throwback: Kublai Khan

Students from Austria and France together in the footsteps of Antonio Salieri and his opera Cublai, gran kan de'Tartari!

Workshop in and around Halle E in cooperation with Les Talens Lyriques

A world premiere more than 200 years late? That only happens at the opera! Cublai, gran kan de' Tartari by Antonio Salieri received its long-awaited world premiere in April at the MusikTheater an der Wien under the title Kublai Khan

Around 100 pupils from Austria and France attended the event and travelled in the footsteps of the composer Antonio Salieri beforehand. The pupils attended the dress rehearsal together and experienced Salieri's Kublai Khan in a production by director Martin G. Berger before the premiere.

A day full of workshops took place before the visit to the play. The pupils got creative themselves. In addition to a guided tour of Halle E, they were able to master various tasks such as making creative short videos or funny snapshots in the City Walk Challenge and thus discover the life and work of Antonio Salieri.

A highlight of the afternoon was the artist talk with conductor Christophe Rousset, director Martin G. Berger and dramaturge Christian Schröder, during which the pupils took the opportunity to ask questions. Who was Antonio Salieri anyway? And what does a composer actually do? What does the everyday life of conductors, directors and dramaturges look like? What is the opera Kublai Khan actually about? And why was it renamed?

See for yourself!
