Over the past two and a half years, the Theater an der Wien, including its building substance, has been thoroughly and sustainably renovated. This has secured the long-term future of the opera house for generations to come. One of the most modern opera stages has been created, which meets the highest standards and requirements in terms of safety and comfort for visitors, artists and staff and guarantees contemporary, up-to-date theatre operations in the long term.

In order to guarantee smooth interaction between the complex stage technology and all technical areas, a large number of training courses, familiarisation sessions, test runs, stress tests and safety checks are necessary. This intensive process will take several weeks and will unfortunately affect theatre operations in the first few months. This will result in the following changes to the programme:

After the opening ceremony on 12 October 2024 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of Petr Popelka and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, the concert performance of the Mozart opera Idomeneo under the musical direction of David Bates, with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, will follow in the evening. Possible further dates are currently being examined and will be announced as soon as possible. The opening will also mark the start of the 2024/2025 season.

In addition to W. A. Mozart's Idomeneo, Robert Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri will also be presented in concert performances. Instead of the family opera Der kleine Prinz planned for December, a concertante family project is being planned. Also on the programme: the two concertante Handel operas Rodelinda Regina de' Langobardi (18.11.2024) and Alcina (19.12.2024).

The first staged production will be the Strauss operetta Das Spitzentuch der Königin at the Theater an der Wien on 18 January 2025, which will also mark the start of the Strauss year. 

If you have already booked tickets for the scenic productions of W. A. Mozart's Idomeneo, Robert Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri and Pierangelo Valtinoni's family opera Der kleine Prinz, you will be refunded the amount of your purchased tickets. Customers who purchased their tickets online (www.theater-wien.at or www.wien-ticket.at) or via our call centre will automatically receive their money back by the end of October.

We ask all others to send us their ticket information ( in particular the invoice number) so that we can initiate the refund transfer (by e-mail to opernkarten@vbw.at or by post to our ticket office). If you wish, we can also provide you with a voucher for the equivalent value of the tickets.
