In his Salve Regina, a passionate setting of the Marian hymn, Domenico Scarlatti takes a very different path. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat is based on the Canticle of Mary in the Gospel of Luke and is an epic musical expression of divine worship with timpani and trumpets.
