STEFAN HERHEIM WINS OPERA AWARD 2022 IN THE DIRECTOR CATEGORY
At yesterday's Opera Award 2022 ceremony at the Teatro Real Madrid, the artistic director of VBW's MusikTheater an der Wien, Stefan Herheim, was awarded the prize in the Director category. Vereinigte Bühnen Wien is a company of Wien Holding.
Nominated alongside Herheim were Rosetta Cucchi, Tobias Kratzer, James Robinson, Simon Stone and Adele Thomas.
Opera Awards honour outstanding opera performances all over the world
The International Opera Awards are presented annually by the London-based professional journal Opera and were established in 2012 to recognise outstanding opera performances around the world. The judging is done by a jury of experts chaired by the editor John Allison.
At the Bavarian State Opera, Herheim was responsible for the production of Peter Grimes (Britten) in February 2022. His debut at the MusikTheater an der Wien with the play Das schlaue Füchslein (Janácek) in October this year was highly acclaimed by audiences and the press. He will also direct the family opera Amahl und die nächtlichen Besucher by Gian Carlo Menotti, which premieres on 15 December.
